Deliverables

Longform x 3

Magic: The Gathering has a massive following all around the world, so it was one of the highlights of my career to direct a number of trailers for their game sets over the years. I directed about 12-15 of them over a three-year period including videos for Dungeons & Dragons as well. It was hard to decide which to include here, but this trailer for their Theros set is probably my favorite.

The client supplied us with storyboards and original card art for these videos and then I worked with a team of uber-talented animators and production artists to bring the still images to life. My role involved a lot of up-front animation direction regarding camera movement, pacing and storytelling elements. As the project progressed I worked hand-in-hand with the team at Wizards of the Coast in Seattle to dial in every detail of each shot.

This was also one of the last projects I handled sound design for as well (I started my career as a sound designer), and these were definitely fun videos to create soundscapes for. This block in particular involved developing a sort of God-speak element that you can hear throughout.

These videos used a technique called camera projection that we became quite skilled at over the course of these campaigns. Camera projection projects 2D assets over 3D mesh that is used to give dimension to what would otherwise be flat imagery.
