This was a great collaborative project between Spacejunk and the team over at Whoop. The Whoop CD and marketing team wanted to showcase a number of their different target verticals (athletics, medical, government, and business) in a white/grey studio environment.

This idea was ideal from a logistics and scope standpoint but my concern was that there wouldn’t be enough visual interest. So we worked up some different elements that could be added while still staying true to the clients’ overall vision.

WHOOP’s tagline for this piece was ‘Sleep, Strain, Recover’ and we hit upon adding some light sweeps across our talent’s faces to subtly insinuate this idea of ‘sleep’ while also adding another visual element.

Our DP, Kenny Mosher, had the idea of integrating a large softbox and ‘stage’ area as well, as seen in the image above, left. This served to ground our studio environment and give it some form. We painted this stage area with glossy paint to give us some additional reflective elements as well.

Our final visual element was integrating a series of light tubes in and around our set. These tubes would serve to add some motion parallax and a sense of depth to what would otherwise be an empty studio.

The tubes took on an even more creative role than we had originally envisioned once we were on set as we realized how quickly we could rearrange them. On our prelight day we came up with a number of patterns for the light tubes that would serve as stages for our actors. For instance, we created swimming lanes for our swimmers:

…a hallway for our doctors…

…even a goalpost for our soccer team.
